Success Stories
Meet Michelle
Michelle provided a good life for her two sons. She had a good job at a call center. They had a nice townhouse in East Nashville and a car. And, both boys were doing well in the magnet schools where they were enrolled. But everything changed in 2005 when the call center where Michelle worked closed. Unable to find work, she relied on unemployment and used all of her 401(k); but when that was gone, she and her boys were homeless. For a year, Michelle and her children spent night after night in shelters and at the homes of family members and friends. She was finally able to get into public housing, but still struggled to pay the rent. Rooftop helped Michelle pay her rent and provide a home for her children.
Meet Conselola
Conselola and her son live in a small, modern townhome in one of Nashville’s Hope VI developments. She has a stable job as a child care counselor that provides good benefits – a blessing in today’s economy. However, her salary is barely adequate to fully meet her and her son’s needs. Conselola’s son’s father paid weekly child support, which she depended on heavily to make ends meet, until he fell on hard times and lost his job. With no income, he was unable to pay child support and this fragile house of cards came tumbling down. Conselola could not pay her rent, but working with low - income families, she knew how to access help for herself. She had heard of the Rooftop program and called a church for a referral. With Rooftop funds, she was able to pay the rent.
