Meet KarenKaren has always lived in Bellevue. She grew up there and now lives in an apartment close to her family. Karen is a single mother with two small children. She used to work for an emergency vet clinic. While it paid well, it also meant working nights and weekends. Karen didn’t want to have someone else raise her children, so she found a new job. Now Karen works for Metro Government. She makes $9 an hour. If she gets 40 hours a week and uses food stamps she can make it. Karen got sick at the beginning of the year and it’s taken several months for the doctors to figure out what was wrong. Karen now faces surgery. She’s used all of her sick leave and knows she won’t be able to pay her rent next month when she has the surgery. Rooftop will keep Karen and her children in her apartment. |
